Electrical Safety in Calgary Homes: 6 Simple Rules

  1. Never ignore heat, buzzing or a burning smell. Outlets, switches and panels should never feel warm. Turn off the breaker and get it checked.
  2. Don’t keep resetting a breaker that trips. It’s warning you about an overload or a fault. Find the cause first.
  3. Keep extension cords temporary. They’re not designed for space heaters, block heaters on long runs, or permanent use.
  4. Use GFCI protection near water. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages and outdoor outlets need it.
  5. Test smoke and CO alarms monthly. Replace them when they reach the end of their service life printed on the label.
  6. Get a permit for new wiring. In Alberta, most new circuits, panels and EV chargers need an electrical permit. It protects your family, your insurance and your resale value.

Electrical Guide FAQs

Can a homeowner do their own electrical work in Alberta?

Alberta allows homeowners to do some electrical work in a single-family home they own and live in, with a homeowner’s permit from the municipality. The work still has to meet code and may be inspected. If you’re unsure, it’s safer and often faster to hire a licensed electrician.

How do I know if my home’s wiring is safe?

Warning signs include warm outlets, frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, burning smells and old fuse panels. If you’re buying an older home or planning a renovation, an electrical safety inspection gives you peace of mind.

Are these guides a substitute for an electrician?

No. They’re here to help you understand your home and make good decisions. For anything beyond simple checks, a licensed electrician should do the work.
